I don't think there's wonky syntax in that sentence, and if there is (I'm not an expert) the main characters at that point are Gumshoe or Pearl, and neither of them speak that formally.

Gumshoe definitely needs a crazy second job in canon. Nearly everyone else seems to have one. Even Phoenix was a card sharp for an underground criminal gang.
